What type of graffiti writer are you?

December 17th, 2009

So I did these posters for a brief called “Hidden Histories.” We were supposed to illustrate not so commonly known stories that we knew, in three illustrations. I was trying to come up with three different aspects of the graffiti culture and started to think of categories of writers and what motivations they have. So I wrote a quiz showing the reader what kind of graffiti writer they would be. The quiz can either end with you being a Trainwriter, Wallpainter or a Bomber, each with its own illustration.

Trainwriter.

I was looking at quite a few graffiti artists turned illustrators to see how they’ve incorporated the aesthetic of graff into drawing. For one thing, graff inspired art tends to be simplified alot, with bold lines and simple characters. Also, there’s alot of intricate but playful compositions. I was trying to stylize my drawings as much as possible.

Wallpainter.

One tutor liked the cyclist in the Wallpainter poster because he has more character than the other guys. So much for stylization.

I was trying to make the images as specific to the categories as possible, but at the same time coherent in style and composition. I’m not sure about how coherent the compositions are but overall I’m really pleased. Alot of the tags, especially on the Bomber piece, were made with my wacom pen, to surprisingly good effect.

Bomber.

I’m going to make them into two-colour sceen prints next year! Let me know if you’re interested! And yes, I realise there’s a great shortage of girls in these images. I agree, it sucks!

Andreas, tack!!
